The Audacity of Some People!

The Audacity of Some People!

This afternoon after placing my groceries in my car at Walmart, I heard two Jack Russell terriers barking their heads off in an unoccupied van with the windows cracked in a stall next to mine. Temp was 105 degrees outside and the vehicle was parked in full sun. I waited five minutes before I contacted law enforcement and animal control. As a dog lover, I can't stand when people have no common sense. I went up to the van and surprise surprise the door was unlocked so I opened it to let air in. I stood next to the van waiting for law enforcement (or the owner) to show up.

Fifteen minutes later the owners came out berating me for "breaking into their van." When I pointed out the obvious, they replied, "they had water, (no water was visible amongst all the junk) the windows were cracked and we were only inside FIVE minutes." I informed them I had called the police, given them their tag number and they were on the way. The male half laughed and stated, "well the car belongs to a corrections officer. It was apparent HE was not the corrections officer as he looked like a meth head. Still, no police responded and they left.

It's a crime to leave animals in a sealed up car... It may not be hot to us outside, but inside a vehicle and with their fur/hair... It's 15-25 degrees hotter!

A new law went into effect yesterday in Kansas that gives bystanders permission (without liability) to forcibly enter an unoccupied vehicle if there is an animal or human inside that may be at risk.

Rachel - you know - in California they would have been arrested for one thing or another.

I wish Kansas would join the 13 other states that have enacted laws to make animal cruelty/abuse a crime just like a sex crime. Currently, several states have offender registries for people who have harmed or abused animals.

Pretty much the same as you...
Open the door, let them out, reach into my car and pull out a bottle of water. Especially if their tongues were hanging out (a clear indication of dogs being overheated)

Not sure about calling the police - I don't really need them to speak my mind for me or take action
But then, I'm not small or a woman That's my "Audacity" or is that arrogance?

But the greatest thing about smart phones, they all have high resolution camera's.

If I could not push the windows lower, or waited more than 5 minutes for the police, I would have gone inside and had management make an announcement over the PA system - nothing like putting idiots on display and embarrassing them in public. I'm pretty sure that's called arrogance

myelin36 replies on 2/7/2018 6:41 am:
I like your idea of having it announced on the PA. I have filed that away for future reference.

One must be careful of direct confrontation ,you may get killed now a days . call animal group .write down license number and description of dogs and owners ,write what you found . give it to animal rights group in town let them investigate the situation .

myelin36 replies on 2/7/2018 6:43 am:
When an animal is confined in an unoccupied hot vehicle, the clock is ticking depending on how long the owners are away from the car and often time is of the essence. My fear was the owners were inside shopping and the dogs would be dead before they returned.

Call police and observe from a distance.

If, BIG IF, people weren't as "uptight" as they are now a days I would have opened the door but who knows what kind of jerk the person(s) are? You got lucky it was just a junkie. But good on you for doing something.

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

The parking lot was crowded and being videotaped. If they wanted to do something foolish then there would be a lot of witnesses and evidence against them to support a murder conviction. If people are that mentally unhinged to kill someone in broad daylight over a dog rescue, then they deserve to be locked up.

Glad that wasn't the cast though.

I give you credit for doing the right thing......if the dogs were kids they would have taken the kids away for a brief period. Poor dogs don't get the same consideration..sadly

I am positive that the police would be running lights and sirens to respond to the parking lot if it were a child locked in a hot car. It's a shame that animals are not given the same consideration.

Call police and observe, if the dogs are getting overheated. Document it on your cell phone. Rescuing dogs this way and getting in the middle of a domestic dispute is a sure way for the good Samaritan to get hurt. You were lucky this time.

I feel I was doing the right thing at the time. I weighed the consequences of being a bystander before making my decision. If it was a child instead of an animal in that vehicle, I am sure that anyone would have taken action regardless of the consequences.

Kansas just passed a law effective July 1 giving people permission to forcibly enter a car if an animal or child is at risk. Unfortunately, that law was a few days away. Fortunately for me, the car was unlocked and the dogs ended up ok.

A garden hose on full force through the cracked window would help. Let the poochies get plenty of water and have a nice cool swim.

Hi myelin, simply opening the door was enough instead of calling police. Best you could have stayed with those dogs till owner came back. He could have understood all of your presence and felt sorry for some delay. You may try this next time, after all we are responsible people. Good luck from - Indian Yogi

If the car had been locked and you called the police and told them that you were going to check the doors to see if they were unlocked if not you were going to break a window to save these dogs I know in California you can do that and the owners can recieve a ticket to go to court for animal cruelity. Those owners didnt care but you did give the tag number they could send them a ticket or even go with there home YOU DID THE RIGHT THING

We've had three kids die in cars because of this same thing. Two were kids of women who
were out shopping the other was a Chef in scottsdale who was setting up a catered
affair. They just forgot they were there.Dogs are all over the place when we're
driving so they really shouldn't be there in the first place.Kids are tucked in a child seat.Connected to a car seat belt in the back of a van .
So whether it's a meth head carting around a couple of expensive dogs or just a mom whose other kids were lucky enough to be in school.
People just need to be mindful of what they're doing.
Dogs are replaceable, sadly kids aren't.

Using more than all the road!

Ugh. Zero tolerance - I'd have done exactly as you did, but I probably would have also taken photos of the dogs locked in the car and another of the license plate, so I could show or send them to animal control if the owner returned and took off. My dog loves going with me in the car and I confess that I DO take her with me all the time, even in the heat (which has been stifling this past week). BUT, I've never-ever-ever left her alone in a hot (or cold) car and never for more than 10-minutes. I leave my car running with the air conditioner or heat on. An auto-starter keeps it running for 20-minutes before shutting off and allows me to lock it up and take the keys. I also keep the windows cracked, which I know makes no sense, but I do it so she can hear the outside world while she's alone. Silly, yeah, but we all have our pet quirks.

I might have broken the window after 15 minutes...………..I can't stand he stupidity of some people.

( I also might have taken the dogs.....I've been known to "rescue" a few dogs in the middle of the night.

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

First of all I dont think you "broke into the car". The car was unlocked and you were helping.

I had a similar situation where a mom left her 3 young kids in a locked (I think) mini van outside a grocery store. I debated to call police. The kids looked fine so I just continue to observe them . Mom came back in less then 10 mins. I didnt do anything else beside observing/watching to make sure kids are safe..

I think it's just stupid t bring your pets with you when you go shopping, I f you can't leave them at home then you don't deserve to have them

You did the smart thing in calling law enforcement .. I hope you kept the tag #. But to have done more than what you did then might have put you at risk, too. I would do a follow up call to the Sheriffs office and talk to the Sheriff about possibly his correction officers problem with who he loans his auto to, and the law they broke while driving it ! With your background you are probably right about them either currently being meth heads or were /will be meth heads in past and future... Sheriff should also know your suspicion on that .... Especially when they laughed about the law being called and told you it belonged to a corrections officer... LTNC in here ! Enjoy !

When/Where ever possible "record-record-record", if You have a witness with You, all the better.
Even tho the van was "un-locked" that is breaking and entering as far as the court*z are concerned.

The Public have a Duty to themselve*z, and the LARGE majority just don't want to get involved. That is perfectly fine by Me and ][ totally TRUST in Karma.
